About Anthony Mathews

Anthony I. Mathews is on the staff at the Beyster Institute at the Rady School of Management, University of California, San Diego. He can be reached at amathews@beysterinstitute.ucsd.edu. Before entering the qualified plan administration field in 1978, he taught at various colleges and universities, including 8 years at UCLA. He holds a BA from Loyola University of Los Angeles and an MA from UCLA. He was formerly a vice-president with Principal Financial Group, heading up the firm's Los Angeles, California, office; before that, he was president of BSI in Los Angeles, California.

Mr. Mathews is a member of many professional associations, including the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO), the Foundation for Enterprise Development (FED), and the ESOP Association. He serves on the boards of several private and non-profit corporations; serves on the board of directors of the NCEO and the board of editors of the Journal of Employee Ownership Law and Finance; is a former director of the ESOP Association and chair of the Association's Advisory Committees' Council; and is an associate member and the vice-president of the California chapter of the ESOP Association.

Mr. Mathews has published many professional articles on a variety of topics related to employee ownership and contributed the chapters on administration to both the definitive text Employee Stock Ownership Plans and the ESOP Association's Administrative Handbook. He is a frequent speaker on employee ownership feasibility, administration, communication, and the practical aspects of managing and living in an employee-owned company on a daily basis.
