Companies must have at least 50% of their stock owned by an ESOP, a stock purchase plan in which most full-time employees can participate, a profit sharing plan or other trust, or some combination of such plans. Companies are ranked by the number of all U.S. and non-U.S. employees, including full and part-time and seasonal employees. Data are from corporate Web sites, company responses to an email, or, if these are not available, the most recent public data, usually 2007.
