Data from the NCEO's 2009 survey of executive compensation practices in ESOP companies is now available. The survey, conducted in February and March 2009, yielded data from 317 ESOP companies across a variety of industries, revenue categories, age of ESOP, and many other company characteristics.

What are the compensation benchmarks for ESOP companies? How much base, deferred, incentive, and total compensation should top executives at your company expect? What about stock options, restricted stock, and other forms of equity compensation? What percentage of the company's shares does the CEO, COO, or top sales executive typically own? Who sets executive compensation?

Directors, trustees, and officers of ESOP companies need the answers to these questions, but information specific to ESOP companies is almost impossible to find. The NCEO's ESOP Executive Compensation Database fills this information gap. An expanded and improved version of our 2005 survey, the 2009 database includes background information about each respondent (company size, age of ESOP, corporate status, stock growth, industry, etc.), details of compensation mechanics (vesting, mechanisms to set compensation, perquisites, etc.) and detailed compensation data for six top corporate officers. (The identities of individual companies are not revealed.)

You may purchase a report that customizes the data to focus on companies comparable to yours, or you may acquire the entire data set (subject to confidentiality provisions).

What Users Are Saying

"This report gives us information that we've needed but found very difficult and expensive to acquire in the past. This is a great service."
— Robert H. Carlson (CEO Emeritus and board member, Reell Precision Manufacturing)

"Not only did we get data on executive compensation in ESOP companies, we were also able to look at compensation levels for companies in our size range and industry type. I was impressed with the amount of data, the different executive positions it covered, and the quick turnaround--I would recommend this to any ESOP company."
— Cindy Turcot (Chief Operating Officer, Gardener's Supply Company)

Ordering a Custom Report

A custom report allows you to break down the data based on criteria you supply. For example, you might look at manufacturing companies broken down by the revenues or at S corporations by the age of the ESOP. The report is emailed to you in PDF format. The cost is $150 for NCEO members and $300 for nonmembers. (If you are a nonmember but join now, you will pay the discounted member price.)

To design your custom report, you can speak with Loren Rodgers, the NCEO staff person who manages the project (phone 510-208-1307) or click here for instructions (PDF format) for specifying the customization criteria yourself. Click here for a sample report (in PDF format).

Ordering the Entire Database for Your Own Analyses

ESOP consultants and others may wish to order the entire database (emailed as an Excel spreadsheet file). The cost is $500 for NCEO members and $1,000 for nonmembers.
