The pandemic and shutdowns provided an opportunity to examine how businesses dealt with a once-in-a-generation economic shock. There is strong reason to believe that employee ownership is a key factor in how businesses and employees fared in this turbulent time.

New data from the Department of Labor shows 6,482 ESOPs operating in the U.S., covering 13.9 million participants. The number of unique companies with an ESOP is 6,257 (a company may sponsor multiple plans).

The Department of Labor has posted the latest filing data, which covers plan year 2021. The data includes a total of 6,533 ESOPs filing for 2021 covering 14.7 million participants holding over $2.1 trillion in total assets.

Handling the repurchase obligation is a critical aspect of ESOP planning and administration. To provide the ESOP community with context for how other companies approach their repurchase obligation, the NCEO conducted a survey of ESOP companies in early 2023.

The NCEO has surveyed ESOP companies since 2015 on their executive compensation to provide robust and ESOP-specific third-party compensation data. Our 2020 ESOP Executive Compensation survey received 424 valid responses, the largest group in the survey’s history.
