About This Meeting

This session is a one-hour overview of to the main features of employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs). It is appropriate for people familiar with basic business and finance topics but new to ESOPs and for those responsible for ESOP communication. The session will cover the current status of ESOPs in the US and some highlights on their performance. The NCEO will use graphics, examples, and simple explanations to provide a general introduction to the features common to all ESOPs. NOTE: Every ESOP is different. This session does not attempt to teach people the specifics of how any particular ESOP works.

Howard Levine is a partner in the in the Chicago office of the law firm of Drinker Biddle & Reath, where he previously served as chair of the firm's national employee benefits and executive compensation practice and now serves as chair of its ESOP transactional team. He focuses his practice on all aspects of employee benefits law, including executive compensation, ESOPs and ERISA fiduciary matters. In the ESOP area, he has represented plan sponsors, selling shareholders and independent fiduciaries in the design, implementation, operation and termination of ESOPs, and in the sale of ESOP-owned companies.
