Handling the repurchase obligation is a critical aspect of ESOP planning and administration. To provide the ESOP community with context for how companies approach their repurchase obligation, the NCEO conducted a survey of ESOP companies in early 2023. The respondents described their distribution practices, diversification policies, confidence about their ability to meet their obligations, and other issues regarding repurchase obligation. This includes written responses from the respondents with insight and advice from their experiences.
The survey data was collected online from January to early April 2023. The survey received a total of 248 valid responses. The report (72 pages) includes an extensive appendix with separate tables for each survey item. Each table in the appendix includes breakdowns by age of ESOP, ESOP ownership percentage, loan status, and revenue.
