A new NCEO survey on ESOP governance practices shows that 13% of the responding companies have an independent institutional trustee, while another 4% have an independent individual trustee. That is down from 21% in 2005, although within the margin of sampling error.

The NCEO gathered executive compensation data for the 2013 fiscal year between April and June 2014, receiving a total of 374 valid surveys from a diverse group of ESOP companies. The survey collected data on base pay, cash incentive pay, stock-based incentive pay, and deferred compensation.

A new NCEO study found that, over the last 10 years, 68 private company ESOP court cases had results in settlements or judgments that cost the defendants a total of $385.5 million. The average payout per employee in these cases was $14,400 per participant.

For anyone interested in employee ownership, the first question is always how many plans there are. Unfortunately, the best we can do is to provide a very rough estimate of the number of plans and participants.
