Is an ESOP Right for You? A Look Back at What Happened in Columbus

If one question can anchor a whole room for a 1.5-day workshop, it must be a pretty complex question.
Is an ESOP Right for You? brings together business owners and transaction experts from every corner of the conversation to work through a critical and complex decision—one that is often brand-new territory for business owners just entering the employee ownership world. Topics span from large-scale culture and organizational process to the nitty-gritty policy building blocks that make employee ownership work in practice.
What transforms this room from an intensive study session into the brand-new community it is, without question, is the shared curiosity and the opportunity for fellow business owners to connect with one another.
The NCEO partnered with the Ohio Employee Ownership Center (OEOC) to bring together business owners from across the Midwest and the broader United States, creating a more collaborative and robust learning environment. The OEOC, a nonprofit program based at Kent State University, has been supporting Ohio employees and business owners exploring employee ownership since 1987. Their regional expertise and network made the Columbus location a natural fit for this event.
Attendees brought their unique perspectives as business owners, each arriving with individual challenges, hard-won experience, and a unique set of questions. Presenters brought years (and in some cases decades) of hands-on experience working with employee-owned companies, combined with deep technical expertise. Together, they fostered a dynamic conversation.
Informal roundtable sessions in particular allowed for the mixing and mingling of individual experience with presenter expertise in a format that allowed for the kinds of candid questions that are often more challenging to voice to a broader room. This type of candor is only possible in a room built for a shared purpose.

These early-stage conversations are what transform companies and inspire successful launches of well-informed, mission-driven employee-owned businesses. Getting it right early certainly matters, and events like this one exist to make that possible.
Prospective employee-owners are at the heart of the NCEO's mission. Integrated, hands-on workshops like the Columbus event often serve as the catalyst for future members of the employee ownership community and their exciting journey ahead.
Events like this are not possible without the incredible support of longstanding members in the employee ownership community, as well as dedicated service providers.
Whether you attended this year or are just now discovering the NCEO, we'd love to have you in the room next time. Share your feedback, explore our upcoming events, and join a community of business owners who are building something that lasts.
