Making a Choice: How Long is Too Long for an Internal ESOP Loan?

When a company uses debt to finance an ESOP, there is a loan to the company (the external loan) and a loan from the company to the ESOP trust (the internal loan). In the early days of ESOPs, the two loans usually had matching terms (i.e., if the external loan was paid in seven years, so was the internal loan)
