New research released on October 19, 2023 on employee ownership in the United Kingdom – the People Powered Growth Report – suggests the UK’s employee ownership sector is outperforming the UK’s national productivity while contributing to several measures of employee and community wellbeing. The report also notes that the number of employee-owned businesses in the UK increased by 30% over the last year.

On August 9, the IRS issued a press release warning about tax avoidance in employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) transactions. It is not clear what prompted the memo or whether there are any specific transactions that the IRS is investigating.

The Institute for the Study of Employee Ownership and Profit Sharing at Rutgers University announced on April 18 that it is launching the Shares Laboratory. The lab will use "big data" and a model of the national labor force to conduct research, monitoring, and policy-relevant work on all forms of equity compensation.
