Two Coops Leave the Mondragon Corporation

The Mondragon Corporation of Spain’s Basque region, an integrated network of more than 90 employee-owned companies plus many worker cooperatives, is the best-known example of worker cooperatives in the world. On December 15, the worker-owners of two of its largest member cooperatives voted to separate from the network, as reported in several articles, such as this one in El Pais.

London Launches Employee Ownership Initiative

On December 2, the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, announced the creation of the London Ownership Hub, which will launch in early 2023 with the goal of creating "the networks, resources and conditions to help worker co-operative and employee-owned businesses across London develop and thrive." London contains nearly 500 employee owned businesses, 30% of the total in the UK, and the sector proved resilient through the pandemic.

U.S. Treasury Program to Support EO Transactions and Working Capital: Update

The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced the 31 states that have received credit funds totaling $10 billion under the State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI). The states, in alphabetical order, are Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, and West Virginia.

The 2022 Fall ESOP Forum: Thank You!

The NCEO's Fall ESOP Forum was held in St. Louis last week, and we offer a huge thank-you to the people who joined us there and showed so much enthusiasm for making employee ownership thrive. It's always our fondest hope here at the NCEO that participants leave every NCEO event not simply with a new piece of information or a bunch of notes on corporate governance but instead with the ability and readiness to do something when you get home that you couldn't do before.
