This Thursday I'll be presenting to our friends in the Netherlands about how American ESOP and other employee-owned companies have fared during this pandemic. Employee ownership provides a lot of benefits to employees, communities, and companies, but one of the less discussed but most important features of employee ownership is that it allows companies to focus on long-term goals and values, not the short-term goals of public company shareholders or private equity firm buyers. Black & Veatch is the 10th-largest majority ESOP-owned company and the 12th-largest engineering company (in fact, 7 of the top 20 are employee-owned, and 6 are NCEO members). Recently, it made a major decision to focus on sustainable energy products and move away from any coal-related projects.

As I wrote in a blog post from July 30, the Ohio Employee Ownership Center's conference is just around the corner. The event, scheduled for Thursday, August 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. eastern time will be hosted via the same platform as our 2020 Annual Conference earlier this year.

Adapting to the socially distanced world, both the Vermont Employee Ownership Center (VEOC) and the Ohio Employee Ownership Center (OEOC) have moved their annual conferences online.

Following his earlier statement on linking employee ownership to government aid, Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) has introduced a bill doing just that. In a press release issued on July 21, 2020, Senator Johnson described the Temporary Federal ESOP Grant Program Act. According to the press release, the bill would:

Vallejo, California-based Michael's Transportation Service, Inc., which has been employee-owned since 2009, announced that it will be adding all-electric Blue Bird school buses to its fleet, making it the first in the state to do so. Though the emissions-free buses won't hit the streets just yet due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the fact that Michael's has already received the delivery suggests that they are well ahead of the curve when it comes to environment-friendly transportation.
